The monsoon of South Asia is among several geographically distributed global monsoons. It affects the Indian subcontinent , where it is one of the oldest and most anticipated weather phenomena and an economically important pattern every year from June through September, but it is only partly understood and notoriously difficult to predict. Several theories have been proposed to explain the origin, process, strength, variability, distribution, and general vagaries of the monsoon, but understanding and predictability are still evolving. The unique geographical features of the Indian subcontinent , along with associated atmospheric , oceanic , and geophysical factors, influence the behavior of the monsoon. Because of its effect on agriculture , on flora and fauna , and on the climates of nations such as Bangladesh , Bhutan , India , Nepal , Pakistan , and Sri Lanka — among other economic , social , and environmental effects — the monsoon is one of the most anticipated, tracked,  and studied weather phenomena in the region. It has a significant effect on the overall well-being of residents and has even been dubbed the "real finance minister of India".

The Variability of the Asian Summer Monsoon
Summer in China is a time of variable air movement out of the western Pacific. If that drift is strong and low pressure over the continental interior is intense, the summer monsoon may carry moisture well into Mongolia. If neither the drift nor the continental low is strong, the China summer monsoon may fail, falter over eastern China, or cause irregular weather patterns that threaten the country with crop failure. Tropical cyclone s—called typhoon s in the Pacific Ocean—may occur in coastal and insular South, Southeast, and East Asia throughout the year but are most severe during the late summer and early autumn.

The author provides an update of the knowledge gained over this period, presenting the modern morphology and the physical principles of monsoon climate variation on all time scales ranging from intraseasonal to tectonic time scales. He brings new ideas that can be expected to markedly improve the prediction of monsoon climate, and includes contributions by experts who expand our understanding of the monsoon environment by their study of paleoclimate records, who present evidence of human influences on monsoon climate, and who describe the links of the monsoon to the economy and to human health.
